After opening with Joan Tower's reflection on the song America the Beautiful, we juxtapose two works that brought timely renewal to the composers that wrote them. Perhaps no composer has experienced such a dramatic and deserved rebirth as Florence Price. Fueled in part by the 2009 discovery of many works assumed lost (including her Second Violin Concerto), Price is now celebrated in concert halls around the world for her unique and important voice as a black American composer. Seventy some years earlier, Shostakovich, finding himself under fire by Soviet government's cultural critics, managed a dramatic rehabilitation of his career with his Fifth symphony which appeased both critics and audiences and remains one of his most popular works.
