Tigran Hamasyan — Sonata for Percussion (NY premiere)
Jessie Montgomery — Lady Justice (NY premiere)
Zakir Hussain — Murmurs in Time (NY premiere)
Note: Carnegie Hall joins the world in mourning the loss of Grammy Award–winning tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, who passed away on December 15, 2024, and was scheduled to perform with Third Coast Percussion on this concert. Since his Carnegie Hall debut in 1970, he had a long history of performing and mentoring young musicians at the Hall. Additional artists for this performance will be announced in the coming weeks.
The Grammy Award–winning Third Coast Percussion performs an entire concert of New York premieres by four singular composers. Featured among them is a work by the late tabla master and global icon Zakir Hussain; new music by Jlin, a 2023 Pulitzer Prize finalist for her previous collaboration with Third Coast Percussion (co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall); Armenian jazz pianist and composer Tigran Hamasyan; and New York City's own Jessie Montgomery, whose music is acclaimed as "turbulent, wildly colorful, and exploding with life" (The Washington Post).
About Third Coast Percussion
For more than 15 years, Third Coast Percussion has created exciting and unexpected performances that constantly redefine the classical music experience. The ensemble has been praised for its "commandingly elegant" (The New York Times) performances, the "rare power" (The Washington Post) of its recordings, and "an inspirational sense of fun and curiosity."
