Three pieces—two Northwest composers—one divine inspiration.

J.S. Bach composed Cantata No. 12, Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen ("Weeping, wailing, fretting, fearing") for the third Sunday after Easter in 1714.

Bach's music has inspired composers from his day to the present. Damien Geter, interim Music Director of the Portland Opera, was inspired by Bach's Cantata No. 12 to compose Cantata for a More Hopeful Tomorrow. Written for choir, soloist, and cello, Getter composed his Cantata during the pandemic. It blends Bach's music with American spirituals and expresses the process of moving from fear to hope.

Our third piece is the world premiere of Jot – The Ultimate Light by Northwest jazz pianist and composer Jasnam Daya Singh. Inspired by his Sihki faith, Jot is dedicated to the idea of the "Divine Light." Composed for our Elysium Quartet (piano, clarinet, violin, cello) Jot – The Ultimate Light blends jazz and classical styles. Join the Bravo! Chamber Choir and Elysium Quartet as we cross boundaries of classical, spirituals, and jazz in this musical trilogy.
