Join us as we continue celebrating the Southwest Washington Wind Symphony's 20th anniversary season. Principal Conductor Patrick Murphy, from the University of Portland, will welcome our prior conductors back to the podium to highlight their important contributions to our legacy of musical performances. Our guest conductors include Mark Lane, Lewis Norfleet, Sam Ormson, and Tim Siess.
About Southwest Washington Wind Symphony
The Southwest Washington Wind Symphony is a 50-musician, professional quality concert band organized in 2005. The mission of the Southwest Washington Wind Symphony is to:
(1) nurture the appreciation of symphonic band music by performing free concerts for the community
(2) provide local musicians and music educators with opportunities for musical growth while performing challenging, high quality band literature
(3) encourage and support music education in the public schools with special emphasis on wind band music appreciation
(4) educate the audience and community on the cultural, historical, and musical significance of the symphonic band genre.

Dr. Patrick Murphy is Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music at the University of Portland. He has presented sessions at regional, national, and international conferences in both the United States and Europe. His historical research includes on Soviet wind band music, about which he is consulted by conductors and researchers worldwide, and on music in Japanese internment camps during World War II. Additionally, he is an active presenter and presider at music education and music theory conferences. A proponent of new and diverse repertoire for wind bands, Dr. Murphy's degrees include a Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Conducting from the University of Arizona, an M.A. in Music Education from the University of Minnesota, and a B.M. from Washington State University, also in Music Education. Locally, he is conductor of the Southwest Washington Wind Symphony and Portland Community Wind Band, in addition to being an active adjudicator and clinician.

Mr. Siess joined the faculty at Vancouver, WA's Union High School in the fall of 2011 where he directs the Symphonic Band, Concert and Chamber String Orchestras, Pit Orchestras, Parade Band, and Jazz Ensemble 2.
In his 28 years of teaching, he has been Director of Bands at South Salem HS, Beaverton HS, Mountain View HS, and Cascade Middle School. He bands won numerous contests and festivals, including two Oregon State Band Contests. The "Blue Thunder" Marching Band at Mountain View appeared in the Fiesta Bowl and Pasadena Tournament of Roses parades. The String Orchestra at Union recently performed at the 2012 Washington Music Educators State Conference.
During his tenure in Salem, OR, Mr. Siess conducted the Salem Concert Band; in 2012, he and Professor Lewis Norfleet co-conducted the Southwest Washington Wind Symphony. Mr. Siess holds degrees from Linfield College and the Eastman School of Music.
