Lakewold presents Baroque meets Mexican: A concert with Tembembe Ensemble

Tembembe Ensamble Continuo returns to the Puget Sound region to combine music of the Spanish and Mexican Baroque guitar with today's traditional Mexican songs. Their program, "Un Fandango Barroco" ("A Baroque Fandango"), demonstrates how and why Baroque and Traditional expressions are two faces of the same coin, distant in time and close in spirit. Tembembe Ensamble Continuo has earned praise in Mexico, the Americas, Europe, and Asia for their truly novel interpretation of this flourishing music. Tembembe Ensamble Continuo was named the 2024 Christoph Wolff Distinguished Scholar Residency by Harvard University.

About Tembembe Ensamble Continuo
Tembembe Ensamble Continuo is a chamber group dedicated to the research and diffusion of Hispanic Baroque music and the traditional sones of Mexico and Latin America. Its members, Leopoldo Novoa, Enrique Barona, and Eloy Cruz, studied in musical institutions in Mexico, Colombia, the United States, and France, and are teachers in music schools in Mexico City and Cuernavaca.
The ensemble was created in 1995 as a musicological research group, with the aim of tracing the history of the link between traditional Mexican sones and other musical currents through a project sponsored by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
The name Tembembe is taken from the homonymous river that runs through the State of Morelos where the group rehearsed and developed its research. The group decided to take this name in analogy to the river, which is formed by many ravines, as our work is the result of many efforts.
