UMD Symphony Orchestra: Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 & Osvaldo Golijov world premiere

Dmitri Shostakovich's fifth symphony came about during a time of intense political persecution. The interpretation of this piece has been hotly debated since its premiere, as many saw it as a criticism of the then dictator, thinly veiled behind exuberant adoration. While we may never know the true meaning behind the composition, one thing is for sure: Shostakovich's orchestration and thematic development create an extraordinary piece that has continued to mystify listeners and scholars to this day.

This program will feature the world premiere of EverYours by Osvaldo Golijov. Originally composed for string octet, this work is inspired by the letters from Vincent Van Gogh to his brother Theo. Fascinated by the intensity of Van Gogh's being, his attention to color and use of "ever yours" at the end of every letter, Golijov composed a work that captured the elements of "everyourness" as he experienced them—vitality, love and attention.
