"Rotations" explore diverse compositional styles through the lens of an unconventional instrumental ensemble. And, as is typical for c)i, the concerts feature four world premieres, each work investigating counterpoint and virtuosity, modernity and historical context, artistic expression, and philosophical meaning.
Kyle Bartlett's Before imagines music's origins, postulating how a proto-language rapidly develops grammar and signification that resonates with, yet differs from, traditional chamber music language. Mark Rimple's Phantasmagoria contemplates creators from the past century: Varo, Duchamp, Zappa, Picasso, and Eliot. Yoon-Ji Lee's new work showcases the Boston-based composer's unconventional, non-linear approach, interweaving rapidly transforming gestures, textures, and tone colors.
Christian Carey's Spell Weavers for clarinet and guitar forms part of his Proteus cycle written for counter)induction, exploring sonic possibilities through atmospheric textures including tremolos, trills, harmonics, pizzicato, multiphonics, and rasgueado. Boyce's Dit de l'alerion bridges the Modern and Medieval, drawing on Machaut's poem/essay on falconry and love.
