During this hands-on workshop, AIR Qi Yu dives into the instrument's fascinating history, its various styles, and basic playing techniques. The session will also highlight the rich diversity of guzheng music, focusing on 9 traditional regional styles—from Shaanxi (陕西) and Henan (河南) to Mongolia (蒙古) and Korea (朝鲜)—each reflecting the unique culture of its area. 

About Strathmore Artist in Residence (AIR) Program

A flagship program of Strathmore's Institute for Artistic and Professional Development, the Artist in Residence (AIR) program was created in 2005 to support artists as they transition to professional careers. Since its inception, the program has mentored 106 musicians ages 16 to 32. Every year, a class of six is chosen after a competitive selection process. Strathmore's AIR benefit from the support of mentor musicians, participate in professional development seminars, and are offered extensive performance opportunities throughout the 10-month program.

About Qi Yu, guzhang

Qi Yu is a guzheng (Chinese zither) player based in the DMV area. Born and raised in Inner Mongolia, China, she began playing the Guzheng at the age of six and was trained in both traditional and contemporary styles. In 2014, she attended the University of Kentucky as an exchange student, later earning a master's degree in both World Music and Recording Arts at Northern Illinois University. She is passionate about exploring ways to blend the Guzheng with Western music styles.

Beyond the stage, Qi shares her love for the Guzheng through master classes, workshops, and recording projects. For her, music is more than just playing notes—it is a powerful form of storytelling, a shared experience, and a deep emotional connection.
