Marin Marais — Selected works
Pierre Hugard — Selected works
Antoine Forqueray — Selected works

The death of Louis XIV marks a watershed moment in French history as the nation’s cultural center shifted away from the courts of Versailles to Parisian salons. During the Régence and on through Louis XV's reign, the French nobility reveled in a world of decadence and insouciance, reflected in the evolving musical tastes that gave way to the rise of the Pardessus de viole and the decline of the bass viol. This program will explore the realm of 18th-century France through the reimagined works of Marin Marais found in the Villeneuve manuscript, the whimsical melodies of Pierre Hugard's La Toilette, and the devilish works of Antoine Forqueray, all reflecting the twilight years of both the Ancien Régime and the viol in France.
