About Westside Chamber Players
The Westside Chamber Players is a student-led chamber orchestra that presents high-level, accessible performances aiding in the development of young, passionate artists. Founded in 2022 by Jersey City resident Julius Akira Mauldin, the Westside Chamber Players (WCP) is a student-led chamber orchestra that shares high-level performances of classical music with local communities. The ensemble is committed to promoting values of inclusivity and equity, and increasing accessibility to the arts.

Cellist Wangshu Xiang, native of Shenzhen, China has has performed all around the world in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, David Rubenstein Hall, Jordan Hall in Boston, MA, Harpa Hall in Iceland, Oslo Konserthus in Norway. As a chamber musician, she is the cellist of the Marian String Quartet, which made their debut in Alice Tully Hall in 2022. As a solo cellist, she won first place in American Protégé Concerto Competition, and second place in American Protégé Piano and Strings Competition in 2016, which she was invited to perform at the Weill Hall at the Carnegie Hall. Wangshu's festival appearances include Music@Menlo, Madeline Island Chamber Festival, Bowdoin International Music Festival, ChamberFest at Juilliard and Montecito Music Festival. After receiving her Bachelor's from The Juilliard School, she is now pursuing her Master's at the Manhattan School of Music. Her teacher includes Julia Lichten, Timothy Eddy, and Allison Eldredge.

A resident of Jersey City, Julius Akira Mauldin is currently a student at the Mannes School of Music in New York City, studying Orchestral Conducting under David Hayes. He is an assistant conductor for the Mannes Orchestra and a cover conductor for the Buffalo Philharmonic, and has led performances with the Mannes Orchestra, Mannes Opera, Mannes American Composers Ensemble and Valerie Coleman's Mannes Flute Ensemble. Julius was also a finalist in the LA Conducting Competition, and in 2022 founded the Westside Chamber Players, a orchestral ensemble made up of conservatory students based in New York.
Passionate about new music and particularly works by Asian American composers, Julius has conducted many premier performances of pieces, including Martinu Prizewinning piece A Truce Within by Jiaying Li, and recently commissioned a new piece for his graduation recital in 2024. An accomplished choral musician, Julius participated in many productions of major works, including performances with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, and as a featured soloist in a Lincoln Center production of Berg's Wozzeck with Esa-Pekka Salonen and the London Philharmonia Orchestra. As a pianist, Julius has studied with Cecilia Cho, and is now accompanist for the Mannes Prep Choruses, and the Glass Menagerie. Outside of music, you can find Julius playing with his cats, Hime and Goemon, or thinking about tiramisu.
