In 1939, composer Olivier Messiaen was on active duty with the French army when he was captured by German troops and moved to a POW camp. Stripped of everything except his "completely harmless" sheet music, Messiaen began to compose Quatuor pour la fin du temps ("Quartet for the End of Time") – including a movement for fellow POW, Jewish clarinetist Henri Akoka. Each movement is related to the apocalyptic Book of Revelation. The Quartet for the End of Time, performed by cellist Matt Haimovitz, clarinetist David Krakauer, violinist Lina Bahn, and pianist Kathleen Tagg, is bookended by a Klezmer-inspired tribute to Akoka by Krakauer and an electro-acoustic work by Socalled (AKA Josh Dolgin). The Akoka project was co-created by Haimovitz, Krakauer, and Socalled, and their recording on Oxingale Records received a Juno nomination.

As of March 31, OBF performance spaces no longer require mandatory face masks or proof of vaccination. The venues do welcome and encourage patrons who wish to, to continue wearing masks while attending performances.
