Ernest Bloch — Piano Quintet No. 1, B. 43
Johannes Brahms — String Quintet No. 2 in G major, Op. 111 "Viola Quintet"
Beethoven's only mature piano quartet is based on his quintet for piano and winds, which was a nod to Mozart's sublime composition for the same instrumentation years earlier. The Swiss-born American composer Ernest Bloch is most famous for bringing the mystic colors of Jewish music to the concert stage and his Piano Quintet No. 1 is a monumental composition that could be a precursor and influence to the film scores of the legendary films of the 1950s. Brahms wrote his String Quintet in G major as his final composition before retiring at the height of his powers. The composition pushes each instrument to their limits as uses the sound of five parts to imitate a full orchestra.
