A visionary young artist known for his passionate performances, interpretive depth, and advocacy for equity in the field of music, bassist Xavier Foley makes his debut at the Phillips. Winner of the 2018 Avery Fisher Career grant, 2016 Young Concert Artist Competition, and 2014 Sphinx competition, Foley is also an active composer who was recently commissioned by Carnegie Hall and the Sphinx Organization for a new work titled For Justice and Peace for violin, bass, and string orchestra.
For his Phillips-debut, Foley presents a number of his own exuberant works for solo bass alongside J.S. Bach’s Cello Suite No. 5 in C minor, a haunting and searching work performed in a transcription for double bass that suits the depth and hue of the instrument perfectly.
