Pacific MusicWorks regrets to announce that it must postpone its April production of Monteverdi's Orfeo due to fundraising shortfall. We are looking to remount this production in 2024, and not only plan to bring back our esteemed artistic colleagues return for this production, but are also working to create inspiring and unique programming for each of them in the coming seasons.

While the production of Orfeo is postponed, in its place we are excited to offer two performances this April 15 & 16 of Monteverdi: Love and Revolution featuring Orfeo artists Danielle Reutter-Harrah, Jason McStoots, Jonathan Woody, and Aaron Sheehan alongside the Pacific MusicWorks ensemble. Please visit the event page for more information: https://pacificmusicworks.org/events/monteverdi_love_and_revolution/. Your tickets to Orfeo will be honored for this concert. Alternatively, you may request a full refund for your purchase.

The greatest musical myth of all is the story of Orpheus. Monteverdi's setting was the first unqualified operatic masterpiece, full of dramatic word painting, narrative urgency, rich orchestration, and exquisite writing for vocal ensemble. L'Orfeo feels as fresh and full of relevance as it must have at its premiere in 1607. Monteverdi specialist and Grammy-winner Stephen Stubbs leads Pacific MusicWorks and the Dark Horse Consort in a concert version featuring Colin Balzer in the title role. Having assembled a cast for the ages here, PMW will also produce a commercial recording, as well as bring L'Orfeo on tour to San Francisco.

About Tekla Cunningham, baroque violin

Baroque violinist Tekla Cunningham delights in bringing the music of the baroque, classical and romantic eras to life with vivid and expressive historically informed performances.

Praised as "a consummate musician whose flowing solos and musical gestures are a joy to watch", her performances have been described as "ravishingly beautiful" and "stellar". Her greatest musical love is music of the baroque and chamber music of all stripes, though she can’t seem to quit Johannes Brahms. She is co-artistic director of Pacific MusicWorks in Seattle, artist-in-residence at the University of Washington and founder and director of the Whidbey Island Music Festival.

Tekla plays regularly as concertmaster and principal player with the American Bach Soloists. Her new release 'Stylus Phantasticus' with Pacific MusicWorks is delighting critics. "Tekla is a marvel…an endlessly songful bird". Early Music America describes the recording as "played with verve, the music presented here reaffirms the old notion that instrumental music can have the flair of any theatrical spectacle. … a stellar vessel for the boldest showmanship".

Tekla plays on a violin made by Sanctus Seraphin in Venice in 1746.

About Dark Horse Consort

The early music ensemble Dark Horse Consort is dedicated to unearthing the majestic late Renaissance and early Baroque repertoire for brass instruments. Inspired by the bronze horse statues in Venice’s famed St. Mark’s Basilica, the ensemble brings to new life the glorious sounds of composers such as Giovanni Gabrieli, Claudio Monteverdi, and Heinrich Schütz. Dark Horse often expands to include vocalists and strings to recreate the rapturous kaleidoscope that was the sound of the early 17th-century ensemble.

Dark Horse Consort has been featured on the San Francisco Early Music Series, the Boston Early Music Festival, the Renaissance and Baroque Society (Pittsburgh), and The Academy of Early Music (Ann Arbor), and numerous venues throughout North America, including collaborations with vocal and instrumental groups such as The Toronto Consort, Blue Heron (Boston), The Rose Ensemble (Minneapolis), Piffaro (Philadelphia), TENET (NYC), Spire (Kansas City), Catacoustic Consort (Cincinnati), Bach Society Houston, Bach Collegium San Diego, Bach Vespers at Holy Trinity Lutheran (NYC), Seicento Baroque (Boulder), and the Clarion Music Society (NYC). Upcoming performances include Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers with TENET and the Green Mountain Project in Venice, Italy, and a featured concert on the Chamber Music Northwest series in Portland, Oregon.
