One of the most extraordinary talents of his generation on classical guitar anywhere in the world, Sean Shibe's performances have been leaving critics writing in superlatives:
"Shibe's music-making is masterful, beautiful and convincing in every way" — The Sunday Times (London)
"There seems to be no limit to Shibe's melodic instincts … the most interesting voice on the guitar for a generation" — Gramophone
"Spectacularly talented" — Classical Guitar Magazine
Shibe joins us with a program celebrating the Spanish influence on music for classical guitar by largely non-Spanish composers. Selections include works by a far-ranging sampling: Poulenc, Thomas Adès, and Harrison Birtwhistle with a New York premiere in the first half, and a second half spanning Latin American composers, with selections from Barrios, Ginastera, and Villa-Lobos – all showcasing Shibe's uncommon artistry and his perspective on the body of work for his instrument.
Attending online: Concert available for viewing online for 72 hours from time of broadcast.
Attending in person: Visitors are not required to show proof of vaccination. Masks are highly recommended at 92NY.
About 92Y
About Sean Shibe, guitar
One of the most versatile guitarists performing today, Scottish guitarist Sean Shibe's innovative approach to his instrument has enhanced his reputation for being "the most interesting voice on the guitar for a generation." (Gramophone) A great admirer of the masterful composers of the past, Shibe is equally committed to new music. Alongside his transcriptions of Bach's lute suites and 17th-century Scottish lute manuscripts, he continues to explore, experiment, and expand the repertoire for his instrument with recent works and new commissions, including a solo work by Thomas Adès and collaboration with Cassandra Miller and Dunedin Consort.
