Brahms took more than 20 years to get his first symphony right and the result is perfection! Setting the words of poet Courtney D. Ware, Carlos Simon traces the journey of a figurative queen "from her journey as a leader in Africa to a slave on an American plantation, to a disenfranchised citizen subject to Jim Crow laws, and finally to the strong matriarch found in many churches presently." Finally, Maeve Höglund joins us for the ravishing songs with which Richard Strauss' wrote his final farewell in music.
