Considered a musical reactionary by some musicians in his time and declared a progressive innovator by Arnold Schönberg, Brahms saw himself as hard-working craftsman and perfectionist. His Piano Trio in C major, Op. 87, is a work of deep feeling and beauty, and it is, as Brahms would put it, "unassailable" from a technical viewpoint.
