Saint Mark's Cathedral, Seattle, WA, United States

SHAK's Early Music Youth Academy chamber orchestra joins forces with the teen choristers of the Saint Mark's Cathedral Schola for a program of glorious Baroque choral-orchestral favorites. String students using period bows are joined by their colleague on Baroque bassoon and by guest artist coach Henry Lebedinsky, organ, guest artist Brian Shaw, trumpet, and director Shulamit Kleinerman, violin. The Cathedral Schola is the 20-voice advanced teen choral ensemble at Saint Mark's Cathedral, directed by Rebekah Gilmore. Bring joy into your winter in this short and sweet concert of favorite highlights from Baroque choral-orchestral masterworks — including Vivaldi's Gloria and Handel's Messiah.

The venue includes free onsite parking.

Admission is free; free-donations will be accepted at the event in support of music education at Seattle Historical Arts for Kids and Saint Mark's Cathedral.

About Early Music Youth Academy

The Early Music Youth Academy is a program of Seattle Historical Arts for Kids, which now includes opportunities in both Baroque and Renaissance repertoires for student levels and ages. The original EMYA program (2014-2020) grew around a group of students who shared the joys of Renaissance chamber music on bowed and plucked strings throughout their middle and high school years. That ensemble appeared at the Berkeley Festival of Early Music, performed for the Seattle Public Library’s exhibit of Shakespeare’s First Folio, and opened for concerts by the acclaimed Renaissance bands Piffaro and the Baltimore Consort.

About Saint Mark's Cathedral Schola

Saint Mark’s Parish has had an active choir since its earliest days. The cathedral music ministry was first developed in its current form during the forty-year tenure, 1951-1991, of Canon Precentor Emeritus Peter R. Hallock. Saint Mark’s established a national reputation in music, particularly through the Compline Choir, the installation of the Flentrop organ in 1965, and through Dr. Hallock’s influential musical compositions.

This tradition was continued in 1992 with the appointment of Mel Butler as Organist/Choirmaster. From 1996 to 2002, Dent Davidson served as Music Associate, and brought tremendous growth to the music ministry particularly in the area of youth music. From 2001 to 2015, Brian Fairbanks served first as Associate for Youth Music, then as Associate Musician, and developed the youth music curriculum further into what is now The Saint Mark’s Choir School.
