One of the most beloved and respected artists of his generation, tenor Lawrence Brownlee is far more than "one of today's most in-demand singers" (NPR), capable of singing seemingly anything from the traditional canon to works composed specifically for him. Through his popular weekly online Facebook program, The Sitdown with LB, he has also become a powerful, eloquent activist voice for equality and diversity in classical music. His new program, "Rising," juxtaposes settings of Harlem Renaissance poetry by such esteemed African American composers of the recent past as Margaret Bonds, Jeremiah Evans, and Robert Owens with newly commissioned works by contemporary composers Jasmine Barnes, Shawn E. Okpebholo, Carlos Simon, Damien L. Sneed, Brandon Spencer, and Joel Thompson. The poets represented in this musical cornucopia range from Arna Bontemps, Georgia Douglas Johnson, and Countee Cullen to Langston Hughes and Claude McKay.
