Modernist Miniatures – Eli Hiton, piano

This solo piano recital explores the ability of these two composers to evoke infinitely rich characters and worlds within concise musical forms. Mompou's approach is proto-minimalist. He builds up just enough melody and harmony to give a sillouette of a scene and then fleshes it out through direct repetition of the theme. Bartók's Bagatelles are much more maximalist. He creates ear-catching worlds through distinctive and unusual rhythms and melodies.
