Join the Eastside's premier 45-piece wind ensemble as they celebrate their 28th season, performing some of the most beautiful wind band music ever written.
For this concert, maestro Dr. Ed Powell serves as your interpretive guide through the following exhibits:
Rocky Point Holiday — This colorful overture is as fun to play as it is to listen to. Composer Ron Nelson’s masterful brush strokes paint an actively aural scene, giving each section a chance to frolic across the staff, playfully driving toward the percussive and brassy climax.
An American Elegy — Frank Ticheli was commissioned to compose this touching tribute in memory of those who lost their lives at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999, and to honor the survivors. In Ticheli’s words, “I hope the work can also serve as one reminder of how fragile and precious life is.”
Scenes from the Louvre — Gathered from an original, Emmy-winning television documentary score written in 1964, musical artist Norman Dello Joio crafted this five-movement suite for band the following year. Simply close your eyes and take a virtual art tour, compliments of Dello Joio’s sonic masterpieces.
Hoe Down from Rodeo — In this beefy ballet by one of our most well-known American composers, Aaron Copland fiddles with a variety of lively western dance motifs that do-si-do in and out of three popular folk songs. Led on by our nimble and energetic woodwinds, the brass and percussion sections round out this familiar knee-slapper.
Give Us This Day — A symphonic melding of both Christian and Buddhist influences, American composer David Maslanka gained inspiration for this piece from a Vietnamese Buddhist monk and his reflections on the possibilities of a future founded on peace.
The March from 1942 — Said to be Steven Spielberg’s favorite movie score by his favorite collaborator, composer John Williams, this memorable toe-tapper will leave you with goosebumps of patriotism.
