Picking a Beethoven Symphony is like choosing between your fingers: they are are all essential! The Fourth is less often performed than all of those following it and yet it is just as masterful and original. Its opening is one of the most enigmatic Beethoven has composed and its finale one of his fiercest.

Twenty years ago, I auditioned a young flutist by the name of Darrin Thaves in whom I saw great potential. My faith in his remarkable abilities was amply rewarded during two decades of great music-making and I am thrilled to welcome him as soloist.

In 2011 and 2012, I had the good fortune to tour Cuba for a series of historical and highly memorable concerts. The deep impact of this journey and the enduring friendships that since blessed my life inspired the composing of Embargo: Suite Cubana. Based on six authentic Cuban dances with highly virtuosic percussion parts, Embargo seeks to celebrate the vibrant culture and the inexhaustible warmth of its people on whose island time stood still.
