Gaetano Donizetti — Overture to Anna Bolena
Special Guest Audrey Chen, cellist and winner of 2014 Sammamish Symphony Youth Concerto Competition.
Special Guest Conductor, Maestro Johan Louwersheimer
A tribute to a departed artist, Pictures at an Exhibition has become one of the most recorded and performed showpieces of the orchestral repertoire. Originally composed as a grand work for piano by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky, the suite intrigued musicians for decades thereafter to try their hand at turning the black-and-white of the piano keys into the full color of the symphony orchestra. Maurice Ravel’s orchestration far outstrips all others in its brilliance and sheer ingenuity – and in turn has been the inspiration for still further rescoring efforts, including rock band, brass ensemble, acoustic guitar, and massed accordions. However, Ravel’s arrangement remains the best-known guide to Mussorgsky’s picture collection.
