Josquin – Salve regina (a 4)

Salve Regina will feature a collection of Marian settings from different composers, nationalities and styles within the Renaissance. The Virgin Mary was one of the most central figures in sacred Renaissance music. Our a cappella choral concert presents several of the greatest Marian texts in a diverse collection of settings. Settings of the Salve regina by Josquin, Lassus and Guerrero demonstrate how different composers have viewed this seminal text.

We will also feature two of the greatest works of the Renaissance: Josquin’s Stabat Mater and Byrd’s 'Magnificat.' Works by Ockeghem, Palestrina, Isaac and Morales expand the Marian theme – including Isaac's grand ceremonial motet, Virgo prudentissima, written in 1507 to confirm Maximilian I's position as Holy Roman Emperor, and to solicit protection from the nine orders of angels and the Virgin Mary for him and the Holy Roman Empire.

Free will donation. Free parking in the parking garage at Skyline.

About Sine Nomine: Renaissance Choir

The Renaissance choir Sine Nomine, directed by Dr. Anne Lyman, is a Community Collegium ensemble, part of the community outreach program of Early Music Seattle (EMS). Founded in 2008 by conductor Gary D. Cannon and singer/manager Pamela Silimperi, Sine Nomine is a mixed-voice chamber choir specializing in the fine performance of early music, including sacred and secular works from all regions. The ensemble’s repertoire ranges from the late Medieval to the Baroque, with special emphasis on Renaissance works of the 15th and 16th centuries. Most of the participants in Sine Nomine also sing in other choruses, ranging from church choirs to semi-professional ensembles.

Sine Nomine is a proud member of the Greater Seattle Choral Consortium (GSCC).
