Ever tried to imagine life without your favorite music? As a music lover, you know that listening to the right tunes and harmonies can positively affect your mood and take your senses to new heights. And what’s better than live, instrumental music? Come feed your need for beautiful music by joining the Washington Wind Symphony for our next concert, Carpe Diem.

Dr. Ed Powell conducts the Eastside’s premier wind ensemble in this winter event that you and your friends won’t want to miss:

Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral – The sheer operatic power of this favorite wind band arrangement from Richard Wagner’s Lohengrin is enough to set you back in your seat. While the character of its composer remains a point of ongoing contention, few would argue with the ability of this work’s grandiose passages to evoke images of an epic wedding procession.

Symphony No. 1 – Based on the hymn, “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” (Pacific Lutheran University’s school song), this symphony was composed by Anderson-Himmelspach, a PLU alum, to honor the memory of Dr. James D. Holloway and Dr. Raydell Bradley – two of his professors, who tragically died just a couple of years apart. (Dr. Bradley conducted the Washington Wind Symphony through 2006.) In this emotional work, the composer pays tribute to these lost musicians and mentors.

Concerto for Horn, movement 2 – Composer David R. Gillingham based his score on a fantasy hymn by Edsel Bonnell. We feature the musical prowess of our own principal French horn player, Becky Miller.

Gloriosa – In this inspirational masterpiece in three movements, composer Yasuhide Ito honors the courage of the Christians who defied the shoguns, placing themselves in great personal peril. Ito intertwines haunting Gregorian chants with traditional Japanese elements into a beautiful blend that will stimulate your spiritual senses.

You’ll be glad you didn’t miss Carpe Diem. Reserve the date for what is certain to be a memorable musical experience.
