Otto Nicolai’s tuneful and light-hearted overture from his opera The Merry Wives of Windsor is based on Shakespeare’s play. The comic opera became Nicolai’s masterpiece and this overture a concert favorite. Delius’ The Walk to the Paradise Garden is his most impressive orchestral work. Featured in his opera A Village Romeo and Juliet, the scene portrays two young lovers in a summer affair who decide they would rather die than be scorned by their families.
Tomasi’s Trumpet Concerto and Arban’s Carnival in Venice are perfect vehicles for the 15-year-old Natalie Dungey, who amazed ASO audiences with her performances of The Trumpeter’s Lullaby in 2009 and Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto in 2011. Topping off this incredible program are J. Strauss’ popular Overture to Die Fledermaus and the showpiece Thunder and Lightning Polka.
