The role of the Church in Western civilization has been intricately intertwined with the history and formation of Western music. Sanctuary explores the many different manners in which religious themes worked their way into the classical music literature over the years – often by very worldly men and on a secular instrument.
The program encompasses a vast range of expression, from the immortal Toccata and Fugue in D minor by Bach through the music of Chopin and Liszt to the hyper-virtuosic evocation of the childhood of Christ in Olivier Messiaen’s "Regard de l’Esprit de joie" from Vingt regards sur l’enfant-Jésus.
Presented by the Haller Lake Music Series.
