Fantastic depictions of great storytelling abound on SMCO’s season premiere. Saint-Saëns’ Assassination of the Duke of Guise of 1908, often called the first film score, joins Beethoven’s epic Coriolan and Stravinsky’s haunting Orpheus, possibly the most beautiful of his ballet oeuvre. Dvořák’s Legends are sure to sweep up the imagination of the listener with their fairytale sound and evocative rhythms, though their stories remain a secret.
