They say that instrumental music is the universal language. It bridges cultural differences and geographic distance, bringing people together to share in the joy of its common dialect. It is in that spirit that the Washington Wind Symphony presents its first concert of the season, “In a Galaxy Far, Far, Away...” Dr. Ed Powell designed this musical tour to be an exciting trek you won’t soon forget.

Join us at Kirkland Performance Center and strap yourself in for some gravity-defying musicianship, including:

➢ Highlights from Star Trek Into Darkness – Written for the 2013 blockbuster movie by the same name, this dramatic medley blends familiar themes from the soundtrack. Challenge yourself to pick out the melody from the original TV series.

Dusk – Gifted composer Steven Bryant wrote this beautiful tone poem to evoke the magical calm of dusk, contrasted by the fiery hues of sunset. The piece was commissioned in 2004 by the Langley High School Wind Symphony of McLean, Virginia.

Galactic Empires – David R. Gillingham’s dramatic tone poem takes listeners on a tour through three movements, each representing a galaxy, including our own Milky Way. The percussion section is featured to reflect the alien and violent moods of the cosmos.

➢ Trumpet Concerto in A-flat major – We’re delighted to showcase local trumpet soloist Raymond Deleon, a PLU graduate and accomplished trumpeter. Frequently chosen as an audition piece at Julliard, Alexander Arutiunian’s acclaimed work offers soulful, Eastern European-style melodies and challenging rapid-tonguing passages that will dazzle and delight attentive brass players in the audience.

➢ Apollo March – Attributed to Anton Bruckner, the Apollo March was composed by Bela Keler in 1957 for the Austria-Hungary Infantry Regiment No. 10.

➢ “Star Wars Trilogy”—With the premier of the next Star Wars movie just weeks away, we’ll pay homage to one of the most popular cinematic series of our time. Featuring themes from sound tracks composed between 1977 and 1984 by the prolific John Williams and arranged by Donald Hunsberger, you’ll recognize many of your favorites, including “The Imperial March,” “Princess Leia’s Theme,” and “Battle in the Forest.”

So tune up your Yoda ears and join us for a concert that’s out of this world. “Like it, you will!”
