Vincenzo Galilei — Selected works

Early music means catchy tunes, fascinating instruments, and a colorful culture of dance, costume, and manners from times past. The Early Music Discovery series, curated by Shulamit Kleinerman, brings history to life for all ages. These performances, under an hour in length, are an affordable, appropriate, and enjoyable way for music lovers of all ages to explore music of all kinds. Programs are held Downstairs at Town Hall.

With musicians including Shulamit Kleinerman, violin; John Lenti, lute; and Jacob Breedlove, viola da gamba, winds, and percussion.

Galileo Galilei grew up in one of Florence’s leading families of musicians, and his daughters were skilled in everything from accounting to drama. You might know him better for his epoch-making contributions to physics and astronomy — and for the clash with the Inquisition that left him under house arrest in his final years. For their first Seattle theatrical performance since reprising Handel’s Alcina at the Boston Early Music Festival in 2015, the kids and teens of SHAK bring this colorful period of history to life with song, dance, and period costume. Director Kleinerman’s instrumental band accompanies with music of the time, including pieces by composer Vincenzo Galilei, the astronomer’s father.

Tickets: $12 adult; $6 student/child

Presented by the Early Music Guild of Seattle and Seattle Historical Arts for Kids. Seattle Historical Arts for Kids is partially funded by Seattle Office of Arts & Culture.
