J.S. Bach – Es ist das Heil uns kommen her, BWV 9
J.S. Bach – Ihr, die ihr euch von Christo nennet, BWV 164

The Seattle Bach Choir, conducted by Dr. Anne Lyman, is pleased to present our second annual Mother’s Day free performance of two cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach in Trinity Episcopal Church’s beautiful Parish Hall. Bach composed hundreds of cantatas during his lifetime, and they have over time become some of the composer’s most celebrated works. BWV 9 and BWV 164 were both composed while Bach was in Leipzig at a time in his life when he wrote some of his most profoundly beautiful and meaningful sacred vocal music.

BWV 9, Es ist das Heil uns kommen her, is based on a theme of salvation by God’s grace alone, while the earlier BWV 164, Ihr, die ihr euch von Christo nennet, stresses the importance of loving God and neighbor equally. Each cantata contains a rich variety of vocal and instrumental music, including choruses, arias, and Bach’s famous chorale settings.

The Seattle Bach Choir is pleased to be able to perform these cantatas as they would have been originally performed, on period Baroque instruments with a professional orchestra consisting of players who frequently perform with the Seattle Baroque Orchestra and Pacific MusicWorks. This concert is free and open to the public.
