Matthew Johnson, a student of Cathedral Organist Joseph Adam, is the Organ Scholar at St. James where he also sings in the Cathedral Choir under the direction of Dr. Paul Thornock. In addition to his work at the Cathedral, Matthew studies piano with Peter Mack.

In the summer of 2015, Matthew was chosen as the Organ Scholar for the Interlochen Center of the Arts summer program. There he played with the World Youth Symphony Orchestra, the World Youth Wind Symphony as well as the Interlochen Philharmonic. At the conclusion of this camp, Matthew was awarded the Interlochen Fine Arts Award for organ. Past performances as organist also include concerts with the St. James Cathedral Cantorei and Chamber Orchestra and the Seattle-based Opus 7 Vocal Ensemble. Matthew recently made his debut with the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra in their performance of Respighi’s Pines of Rome.

Matthew was recently selected as one of six organ students to attend the Philadelphia Young Artists’ Organ Camp this summer, where he will work with Alan Morrison and Peter Richard Conte. Their final concert will be played on the famed Wanamaker Organ. Following his time in Philadelphia, Matthew will travel abroad as one of nine international students chosen as a “Young Talent” for the International Summer Academy for Organists in Haarlem, The Netherlands. In Haarlem he will have the opportunity to learn from Guy Bovet, Peter Planyavsky, Christophe Mantoux, Ben van Oosten, Leo van Doeselaar, and Jos van der Kooy.
