In traditional classical music, the lush romanticism that took hold for most of the 19th century developed into an expressionistic world featuring a divergence of style, expansion of form, and exploration of new tonalities. Spanning the years 1894-1926, this program showcases the incredible variance in compositional style from Brahms' absolute music of the Romantic Era, Debussy's Impressionism, Berg's atonality, the Dadaism and jazz of Schulhoff, Stravinsky's version of tango and jazz, and Gershwin's jazz-influenced early-20th-century American classical music. A premiere of a piece by Eli Cohen inspired by the concept of the program will also be presented.
