London at the end of the 17th century was a bustling city with a healthy musical life. In addition to the thriving publishing market providing music to amateurs to enjoy in their own homes, the popularity of the public concert was also on the rise. England was at the forefront of the development of public concert life, in part thanks to collaborations between amateur and professional musicians, and concertgoers embraced a diverse selection of musical styles: from older English fantasias to newer sonatas from the continent.
In the library of one musical enthusiast, works in the most up-to-date Italian and French styles sit alongside English compositions by composers from the turn of the 17th century, fifty or sixty years earlier. Christine Wilkinson-Beckman (violin/viola) joins sound|counterpoint to present a choice sampling of pieces from libraries of Thomas Britton and Gottfried Finger, featuring music by Locke, Purcell, Matteis, and others.
