Parry – I Was Glad
Handel – My Heart is Inditing
Bach – Komm, Jesu, Komm
Bach – Mass in G major

Join the Seattle Bach Choir for our inaugural concert of the 2016-2017 season! We will be performing two of Bach’s most cherished sacred works, as well as two anthems composed for the coronation of two English Queens.

Handel had just become a naturalized English citizen when he was commissioned to compose a set of anthems for the Coronation of English King George II and Queen Caroline. Utilizing texts selected by the composer himself, Handel wrote My Heart is Inditing for the separate coronation of Queen Caroline, an elegant affair for a monarch who was dearly beloved throughout her reign.

Sir Charles Parry composed his coronation anthem, I Was Glad, for the crowning of England’s King Edward VII , in 1902. Each of these pieces has been performed at every English coronation since their composition.

J. S. Bach composed the Mass in G major, one of the so-called Lutheran Masses, most likely for performance during a church service. All six movements of the mass, written for choir, vocal soloists and chamber orchestra, were composed using music previously written in German for performance in his cantatas. Bach’s Komm, Jesu, Komm is one of his celebrated and often-performed double-choir motets. The provenance of these works in somewhat uncertain, but they remain among Bach’s most beautiful and complex works written for choir.
