José Mauricio Nuñes Garcia was an African-Brazilian composer who was the grandson of slaves. Born in Rio de Janiero and ordained as a priest, he composed sacred and secular works. He was familiar with and influenced by classical era composers such as Mozart and Haydn. It is fascinating to hear sacred motets by Nuñes Garcia in the context of Mozart's works.
