Each year during Holy Week, St. James Cathedral observes the office of Tenebrae (“shadows”) in which the sufferings of Christ are foretold in the Lamentations of Jeremiah (setting by Thomas Tallis) and commemorated in the slow extinguishing of candles. The evening culminates in Gregorio Allegri’s stirring setting of Psalm 51, Miserere mei, Deus (“Have mercy on me, O God”). Other music includes chant sung by the Men's Chant Choir and Gesualdo's O vos omnes. The Very Reverend Michael G. Ryan presides.
This liturgy is open to all; a freewill offering is accepted.
