On Sunday, March 11, the Compline Choir at Saint Mark’s Cathedral will present Lætare, a program of readings and musical responses corresponding to the themes in Sanctuary. The texts have been chosen by the members of the Compline Choir, with music by members & director of the choir, Peter Hallock, Erin Aas, and Belinda Carlisle. The stylistic range of readings and music give physical dimension to the many voices and interpretations of musical sanctuary. The Compline Choir will perform the readings and music from different points in the cathedral (like Stations of the Cross) to create perspective in the interpretation of the visual, written, and musical responses, creating a “musical sanctuary.”

Josh Faught’s monumental hand-woven textile Sanctuary, installed on the massive southeast pillar of St. Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle, integrates popular and sacred music, a supernatural soap opera, and records of gay politics, sexuality, and culture in the region. The work was commissioned by Western Bridge in 2016 for display at the cathedral, and it connects the church’s own choral history with instances of popular and subcultural musical sanctuary. Josh Faught will be in attendance at the event and will share his thoughts as well.

This event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow. Later in the same evening, at 9:30 p.m., the Choir will present a special office of Compline, during which the new, crowdfunded Compline window will be dedicated to the memory of Dr. Peter Hallock.
