Please join us for a performance of Mendelssohn's Octet in Queen Anne with musicians from Seattle and Vancouver to kick off the summer in the Pacific Northwest!

Li-Ling has been an active freelance violinist since 2007. Ms. Liao has been invited frequently to perform as a soloist and a chamber player in North America and Asia. Since moving to the Northwest area, Ms. Liao has played with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (BC), the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra, Yakima Symphony Orchestra, and is currently associate concertmaster of the Vancouver Island Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Liao was a faculty at the Vancouver Academy of Music, and the Yakima Valley Community College. Ms. Liao holds a doctorate degree in Violin Performance from the University of Maryland at College Park.

Chris Lin started the violin at age 4, and the piano at age 5. He studied with Daniel Kobialka, former principal second of the San Francisco Symphony, and currently freelances with the Federal Way Symphony, the Lake Washington Symphony Orchestra, and the Seattle Philharmonic. He has won first prizes at the Southwestern Youth Music Festival, performed with the National Festival Orchestra under Benjamin Zander at Carnegie Hall, and served as concertmaster and associate concertmaster of all-California and all-national youth orchestras. Chris received his PhD from the University of Washington and his BA from UC Berkeley.

Samuel Tsui began learning the violin at the age of 5 and continued his studies in Canada. He was awarded a full scholarship to further his music education at the University of British Columbia, attaining both his Bachelors and Masters degrees specializing in violin performance under the tutelage of Jasper Wood. During his studies, Samuel was frequently appointed concertmaster of the UBC Symphony Orchestra.Samuel currently performs as the Principal second violinist of the Vancouver Island
Symphony Orchestra, Concertmaster of Willingdon Church Orchestra and violinist of Rose Gellert String Quartet, Vancouver String Quartet and Canada West Chamber Orchestra. He also served as the personnel manager and a first violinist of the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra previously. Samuel has become a well sought-after violinist in western Canada, where he has been invited to perform and record for various high-profile occasions and has worked with notable artists including Michael Bublé, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, 2 Cellos, and Hong Kong singer Alan Tam.

After moving to Vancouver, Manti Poon furthered his studies in viola performance with Professor David Harding at the University of British Columbia on full scholarship. Since then he has become a much sought-after musician in British Columbia as a soloist, orchestral musician and chamber music collaborator.
Apart from holding the position of principal violist with the Vancouver Island Symphony Orchestra, he also performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and the CBC Vancouver Orchestra, to name a few. Mr. Poon had also collaborated with the members of the Pacific Rim String Quartet, the Rose Gellert String Quartet, the Koerner String Quartet, the Vancouver String Quartet, the Borealis String Quartet, the Purcell String Quartet and the Emerson String Quartet.

Rafael H. Howell-Flores was born in San Jose, Costa Rica. He started his musical studies at Conservatorio de Castella where he earned his high school diploma and an honorable mention in violin performance. In 2002 he won the Monroe Scholarship to study at Loyola University New Orleans, violin and viola. In 2005 due to hurricane Katrina he got relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico where he concluded his undergraduate viola performance degree and then earned his Masters in Music Performance at University of New Mexico. Rafael has played in numerous orchestras and chamber ensembles including The World Orchestra, New Mexico Philharmonic, Santa Fe Symphony, San Juan Symphony, Ensamble Tarrazú and The World Orchestra Soloists. Now established in Seattle, Rafael freelances with different orchestras throughout the Puget Sound, he also has an active violin-viola studio in Issaquah and also works as a Teaching Artist for Seattle Symphony as well as a violin coach for Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra.

A native of Toronto, Peter Ing currently resides in Vancouver, B.C. He is an active freelance musician and violin/viola pedagogue. He holds a Master Degree from the University of British Columbia and has since performed in music festivals across North America and Europe, including the Kent Blossom Music Festival, Colorado String
Quartet Festival, and the Casalmaggiore International Music Festival in Italy. Peter freelances with various orchestras in the Lower Mainland and Thompson-Okanagan Region of B.C. such as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Island Symphony
Orchestra, Kamloops Symphony Orchestra, and Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra. As a chamber musician, Peter is the violist of the Rose Gellert String Quartet, the quartet-inresidence
at the Langley Community School of Music.

Janice Lee is an active performer and coach in greater Seattle area. She began playing the piano at age five and cello at nine. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and Cello Performance from National Tainan University, Taiwan and her Master’s Degree in Cello Performance from the University of Washington under Toby Saks. Janice performs regularly with Puget Sound Concert Opera, the Gilbert and Sullivan Society, and the Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to freelancing, Janice also serves as pianist at Kennydale United Methodist Church.

Cellist Julie Cho holds a Professional Performer’s degree (Konzert Examen) in Cello Performance from the Robert-Schumann Hochschule Duesseldorf, Germany and a Soloist Diploma (Master’s degree) in Cello Performance and Chamber Music from the Folkwang University of the Art Essen, Germany.
She was a former member of the JK Ensemble, Prime Orchestra, and the Leaders Ensemble in Korea as well as membership in the German orchestras Deutsche Kammer Akademie and the Prometeus Kammer Orchestra. She is currently a member of the Symphony Tacoma as well as North Corner of Chamber Orchestra.
She has served on the faculty of the Seattle Conservatory of Music, Music Center of the Northwest and The Bear Creek School where she coached String Orchestra. Julie also maintains a successful private teaching studio in Bellevue.

About Ellinor String Quartet

The Ellinor String Quartet (ESQ) brings professional chamber music to diverse communities throughout the Puget Sound. The quartet is a member of the 4Culture Touring Arts Roster, and has performed at music festivals celebrating Latino, and Taiwanese culture. In addition to performing in concert halls, ESQ also brings the string quartet repertoire to intimate neighborhood spaces, from public libraries and community churches to local public schools, where the quartet volunteers coachings and concerts in a dedicated effort to inspire the next generation.

Members of the ESQ have studied with pedagogues at the world's leading institutions, including the New England Conservatory, the San Francisco Symphony, the Boston Conservatory, the Lucerne Conservatory, the University of Washington, the University of Maryland, the University of New Mexico, and the University of California, Berkeley. The quartet takes its name from Mount Ellinor, a stunning peak in the nearby Olympic Mountains.
