We now live in a world where superb choral composing is happening all over the globe, and music for choirs like Ancora is rich and varied. Ancora will expose their audience to this state-of-the-art with a program titled “Postcards: Songs from the Four Corners,” featuring songs suites of Russia, Japan, Spain, and Iran.
From Behind the Caravan: Songs of Hâfez is the centerpiece of the concert featuring mystic, 14th century Sufi poems in an arresting setting by Abbie Betinis. Bob Chilcott's suite Furusato presents five evocative arrangements of Japanese songs. Suite de Lorca, on poems by Federico Garcia Lorca, won worldwide fame for Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara. The young Sergei Rachmaninoff's Six Choral Songs reflect on the romance and nostalgia of Old Russia.
