St. James Cathedral Resident Ensemble Opus 7 welcomes the holiday season with a stunning program of choral music for Advent and Christmas. Opus 7 has a longstanding tradition of performing settings of the seven “Great O Antiphons” – ancient texts that are sung during the last week of Advent. This year, they will perform antiphons settings by seven different composers, representing the Eastern European countries of Poland, Latvia, and Slovenia, as well as the United States, including two works from Seattle-area composers. Four of the pieces – by Tadja Vulc, Rihards Dubra, Melissa Dunphy, and Kile Smith – will be Northwest premieres.
The other half of the program features Samuel Scheidt’s jubilant A Child is Born in Bethlehem; Georg Schumann’s chorale motet, Vom himmel hoch; Paweł Łukaszewski’s Ave Maria for double choir; two luminous Christmas works by Russian composer Georgy Sviridov; and the popular setting of O nata lux by Morten Lauridsen.
Please join Opus 7 under the baton of Artistic Director Loren Pontén as they present sublime choral sounds for the holiday season.
Tickets: $20 general admission, $40 preferred seating (in advance); $24 at the door
