Ludwig van Beethoven – Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37
Jean Sibelius – Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43
Jean Sibelius' Symphony No. 2 has long been regarded as the ideal for a Romantic symphony – it encompasses moods that range from peaceful to heroic, and concludes in a blazing victory of triumph over struggle. Similarly, Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3, the "darkest" of his seven concertos, takes performers and audience into a complex emotional world that yields hard-won joy at its exultant conclusion. This performance features special guest pianist Cristina Valdés.
