Join Seattle Art Song Society to explore mental health and substance use through song. This recital holds up a light to some of the places we as a society often try to ignore. The program takes on a journey from Bedlam, and the Romantic portrayal of "madness" in song, to the ecstasy of opium, and the robust and raucous ramblings brought on by drink. Interspersed with each song set is a new cycle that takes a more realistic view of mental health and substance use and helps ground us in the reality of this matter which many affects many lives on a daily basis.

The recital features works by Richard Rodney Bennett, Ned Rorem, Robert Schumann, Hugo Wolf, Richard Strauss, Franz Liszt, Frank Martin, Samuel Barber, Camille Saint-Saëns, Arthur Honegger, Emmanuel Chabrier, Gioacchino Rossini, and a world premiere of a cycle by SASS’s own Brian C. Armbrust.
