Ben Albertson, harp

Richard Wagner – Prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, WWV 96
Claude Debussy – Danses sacrée et profane
Dmitri Shostakovich – Symphony No. 10 in E minor, Op. 93

The OSO opens the 2019-2020 season with a concert called “Corrective Lenses.” The main work is Shostakovich’s greatest symphony, his Tenth (1953), written in the wake of Stalin’s death. Described as an “optimistic tragedy,” it portrays life in Russia during the “reign of terror” – the second movement is a terrifying portrait of Stalin – and looks to a hopeful future. We welcome back Olympia native Ben Albertson, as a rare harp soloist in a delicate work by Debussy, and the concert opens with Wagner’s Prelude to Die Meistersinger – another musical fusion of the old and the new.

Tickets: $6-$60 ($6-$54 military/student)
