Georg Friedrich Haas – In iij. Noct. ("In the Dark")

Ever hear a concert in complete pitch-black darkness?

Emerald City Music has been hailed as the “beacon for the casual-classical movement presenting high-level musicians in a totally unstuffy environment” (CityArts Magazine). They’re the eclectic, open-bar destination for Seattle’s music lovers to dive deep into the world’s biggest genre of music alongside an unbelievable cast of top-tier musicians.

On the heels of Halloween weekend, immerse yourself in a terrifying musical experience – Georg Friedrich Haas’ In iij. Noct. for string quartet. With the absence of light as the focus, this hour-long string quartet is performed completely in the dark as four musicians surround the audience from the corners of the venue. This, Haas’s third quartet of such nature, is composed as a verbal score, with many details and decisions left to the performers. No single performance of this work is the same – the musicians throughout the piece will decide (by communicating in complete pitch-black darkness) how far they wish to go down each musical path together before turning back.

“Single-handedly raising Seattle's profile in the classical music world, this series has major performers and composers in a chamber music setting. The venue, the back of a coffee and chocolate shop, increases the salon sensibility.” – ECM Audience member
