In the early 18th Century, the Dresden court orchestra was considered the best in Europe, in no small part due to the leadership of Johann Georg Pisendel and Francesco Maria Veracini, rival violinists whose extravagant virtuosity was outdone by their colorful and larger-than-life personalities.
