Mitsuko Uchida, piano

Franz Schubert – Impromptu in A-flat major, D. 935, No. 2
Franz Schubert – Impromptu No. 2 in A-flat major D. 935 No. 2
Franz Schubert – Piano Sonata No. 18 in G major, D. 894

A Cal Performances at Home spring highlight! Any opportunity to experience the magisterial pianism of Mitsuko Uchida is a rare and special occasion, and this recital, recorded in the sublime acoustics of London’s Wigmore Hall, is no exception. One of the supreme pianists of our time, Uchida is a revered interpreter of Schubert, and here she performs a recital dedicated to the composer’s stirring piano music, featuring two Impromptus—one deeply moving, the other dramatic and turbulent—and the transcendent Sonata in G major, which explores terrain from meditative to tempestuous. “She seems to have a special feel for Schubertian rhetoric: the silences, the asides, the abrupt shifts of direction. And here she captured every ounce of intimacy as well as every pound of grandeur” (The New York Times).
