The Houston-based professional ensemble ROCO concludes its 16th season with the In Concert series finale “Flamenco”, showcasing the full 40-piece orchestra in a free, livestreamed program of contemporary and 20th-century works.

Conductor Brett Mitchell makes his return to ROCO, leading the world premiere of The History of Red – a co-commission by Reena Esmail based on a powerful text by Chickasaw poet Linda Hogan – with soprano Kathryn Mueller as soloist, who will also feature in Samuel Barber’s classic Knoxville: Summer of 1915.

The program also presents the world premiere of Texas composer Quinn Mason’s Princesa de la Luna for harp and strings, plus selections from Errollyn Wallen’s Photography, and wraps up with selections from Carlos Surinach’s fiery flamenco for orchestra, Ritmo Jondo, accompanied by live dance from the company Solero Flamenco.

ROCOrooters (ROCO’s music education program for children) has gone virtual and is available online in conjunction with all of ROCO’s In Concert and Unchambered performances during the 2020-2021 season. “ROCOrooters in the Cloud” includes free, downloadable materials, with themed learning activities, so the whole family can enjoy the concerts together. The livestream will take place at 5pm Central / 3pm Pacific, broadcasting live from The Church of St. John the Divine, in Houston, TX.
