Claudio Monteverdi – Selections from the Eighth Book of Madrigals ("Madrigals of Love and War")

Multi-instrumental virtuoso, conductor, and musical polymath Jordi Savall offers a rare and precious gift to his many Berkeley fans – a special streamed presentation of selections from Monteverdi’s Madrigals of Love and War. With these sumptuous works, published late in his life, the composer proposed a groundbreaking model for how music could convey a wide range of emotion. The set includes a wealth of musical treasures, including the wondrous “Lamento della Ninfa” and “Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda.”

Here, for this Cal Performances at Home presentation, Savall gathers his musicians for a special recording session in Barcelona. “These madrigals are among the supreme glories of 17th-century vocal art, and Savall does them proud. Whether making love or sallying boisterously into battle, his singers and instrumentalists bring out every musical and expressive nuance” (Chicago Tribune). Savall has gathered his musicians for a special recording session in Catalonia, Spain, for this Cal Performances at Home presentation.

This video will premiere on June 3, 2021 at 7pm Pacific, and will be available on demand until September 1, 2021.
