Join us for a four-day workshop/festival focusing on the early years of this iconic genre. Held on beautiful Whidbey Island (affectionately known as "The Rock") northwest of Seattle, this one-of-a-kind experience is for percussionists, music educators, 20th-century music enthusiasts and those simply eager to learn about “artful noise”. Uniquely designed as a two-fold experience, participants will explore classic percussion ensemble repertoire through both historical and performance contexts.

Hosted by the percussionists of Whidbey's Saratoga Orchestra and led by special guest faculty, Dr. Kathleen Kastner, noted percussion educator, scholar and historian, this new festival of old music promises to deliver a “whale of a time”.

Program to include:
Thomas Siwe – E.V.
Gerald Strang – Percussion Music for Three Players
Alan Hovhaness – Selections from October Mountain
John Cage – Child of Tree
Johanna Beyer – IV
Carlos Chávez – Xochipilli

The concert will take place at 3pm.

About Saratoga Orchestra of Whidbey Island

Whidbey's Saratoga Orchestra formed as an expansion of the Saratoga Chamber Players founded by Whidbey Island's legendary violinist and arts supporter, Michael Nutt. Previously known as Saratoga Chamber Orchestra, the name is derived from the beautiful Saratoga Passage that flanks the east side of Whidbey Island and the stand of trees known as the Saratoga Woods. In 2007, Legh W. Burns, Music Director Emeritus, began a regular concert series performing throughout the island for Whidbey audiences. Dr. Anna Edwards has led the orchestra as Music Director since 2015, and has brought national attention to the ensemble for its innovative programming championing women, BIPOC and underrepresented composers and hosting the highly esteemed Pacific Northwest Conducting Institute held each summer.
